Student Auxiliary Officers

Penn State University Police and Public Safety utilizes enrolled students, referred to as Student Auxiliary Officers (AOs), to supplement its full-time police force and security teams at the Penn State University Park and Altoona campuses.

These Student Auxiliary Officers, who come from a wide range of backgrounds and have an equally wide array of future goals and majors, provide a variety of services year-round to support the department. This support includes, but is not limited to:

  • general property protection

  • traffic control

  • supplemental security for campus events large and small

AOs are deployed to provide security and traffic control for numerous campus events, including ICA sporting events, Rec Hall events, HUB Late Night and HUB socials, Bryce Jordan Center events, Arrival Days, Ag Progress Days, etc. Additionally, they patrol the residence hall areas throughout campus to ensure student housing is secure.

University Police at University Park and Penn State Altoona has current openings for Student Auxiliary Officers at University Park. Please take a moment to review the video below to learn more about the position and what it entails.

Pay for Auxiliary Officers at University Park starts at $12.50 per hour, with differentials for working overnight shifts and on determined holidays. Domestic students may work up to 30 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours per week during break times. International students may work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and 30 hours per week during break times.

Pay for Auxiliary Officers at Penn State Altoona starts at $13.00 per hour.

All Auxiliary Officers are paid for training and are provided a uniform with the exception of footwear and an undershirt. All majors are encouraged to apply, as are international students.

Employees must be full-time Penn State students during the regular school year and be willing and able to work varied hours during the day and night. AOs are expected to work shifts during mandatory periods including student arrival and departure days, home football game weekends, THON weekend, etc.
