K9 Unit

K9 Zain, handled by Officer Josh Quimby (pictured, left) and K9 Bo, handled by Officer Dustin Miller (pictured, right), and are both 2-year-old German Shepherds and integral members of the department's K9 Unit. Their presence significantly enhances the force's capabilities in detecting explosives, collecting evidence, and supporting University Police in ensuring the safety of the Penn State Community.
The canines are trained to identify and locate more than 20 different types of commercial, homemade, and military explosives, and to conduct searches for both firearms and shell casings.
Though stationed at University Park, the Unit collaborates across the state, aiding Commonwealth Campus locations and local law enforcement in varied operations. Regularly patrolling and securing major University events and facilities, the Unit handles over 30 emergency service calls each year, including bomb threat investigations at schools, universities, and businesses.
