The Hazardous Device Unit plays a crucial role in safeguarding Penn State's campuses and surrounding communities from potential threats involving military ordinance and suspicious packages. With the aid of two bomb robots, the specialized team is frequently called upon to respond to emergencies across the University, providing export support at large-scale events, major campus gatherings, and regional activities. Their responsibilities extend beyond the University, as they also assist neighboring law enforcement agencies as needed, ensuring public safety across a broad area.

Members of the Hazardous Device Unit are highly trained professionals who undergo rigorous preparation to handle dangerous situations with precision and care. Each bomb technician completes an intensive six-week initial training at the FBI Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama, followed by a minimum of 120 hours of continuing education annually. This ongoing training includes collaboration with the Philadelphia Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit, monthly in-service drills, and joint simulation exercises with partner agencies. Through this comprehensive regimen, the team remains ready to respond swiftly and effectively to hazardous incidents, upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism within the University community.
