Crime Alerts

Crime Alerts are notifications of offenses where a timely warning is not required. These may be directed to a certain portion of the Community to alert of a non-Clery reportable offense. Also, Crime Alerts may be used to solicit information from the public to assist in identifying suspects or information that assists with investigative efforts. Crime Alerts are Word Docs that are generally posted in the residence halls and buildings around campus.

Description of Crime

Penn State University Police have received reports of scammers calling and “spoofing”, fraudulently displaying, a number to appear that the caller is from a legitimate agency. The callers are indicating they are from a government agency (FBI/DHS/IRS/POLICE) and tell the victim that they owe money. The callers provide personal information about the victim that is publicly available in an attempt to make this phone call seem more credible. Callers have requested the victims to either provide credit card information over the phone, mail in funds or withdraw funds and then meet them to make payment. If you have received this type of phone call, please DO NOT provide the caller with any information over the phone and contact your local police department immediately.
